The Novel
Red Dawn (赤色黎明) is a Chinese web novel by 绯红之月 (Crimson Moon), published on Zongheng Literature in 2013. It's set in 1905, during the last years of the Qing Dynasty.
The novel is often described as a novelization of Mao Zedong's Selected Works. Rather than focusing on battles or technology, it details the practical work of revolution: party organization, land reform, mass mobilization, and base area economics. It became widely influential among Chinese readers and was regarded by many as the most effective piece of popular communist political education produced in the web novel format.
"Smash all the chains forged by the enslavers. In revolution, we lose only our chains—we gain the whole world. The horizon before dawn shall be red as blood!"
Red Dawn was banned in China in 2025. This translation exists to preserve access to the work in English.
